Hang the stockings, decorate the tree, bake the cookies…. And get your resume ready!
Although December is usually filled with festivity and fun, it is also one of the most wonderful times of the year to put together your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, and have them ready to apply to jobs in the new year.
January is synonymous with new beginnings, and there are a couple of factors that make it the best month to start applying for jobs. To begin with, many companies review their financial situation and set their annual budgets for the following year during the fall, which includes how many staff they plan to add to their teams. Consequently, companies often prepare to initiate the recruitment process once everyone has returned to their desks after the holidays.
Additionally, time off during the holidays can allow for more time to reflect, and consequently initiates a natural desire for change. As people leave their jobs for other opportunities, a door may be opening for someone new to step in.
We also see a lot of companies giving out their annual bonuses around Christmas, motivating employees to wait to receive these bonuses before quitting their jobs so that they are not leaving any money on the table. As vacancies arise, more postings will go up.
These factors result in January being THE BIGGEST month for new job postings and hiring.
